Europe or Bust!: Roma, Italia Day 1

On our first day in Rome we hoped the weather would be better enough for some wandering of the streets.  However, when we woke up we were met with residuals of a snowy night that blanketed the Eternal City.  When we got out of our B&B the sun was out just enough to give us some hope for a good day.

This is the courtyard that our BnB was in.

When we woke up there was snow on the ground. Last week it snowed for the first time in 26 years and now it snowed again!

On our way to the Coliseum we passed some sort of ancient building.

Smart cars are very small.

Typical Italian car.

The typical buildings in Rome are beautiful, some colorful and each similar to the next but yet full of its own character.  My favorite time in Rome/Europe was being met with these buildings..a sight to see.

Cars parked any way they could, even on the sidewalks...If there was space they parked.

Our first view of the Coliseum.

There was a fountain in the park we walked through to get to the Colosseum, it was hidden just enough through a grove of trees that we would have passed it, if it weren't for the sound of water splashing.

This is the site where the gladiators trained. It was across the street from the Coliseum and was connected via a tunnel.  It was covered in snow and you can't really see a lot of it but just being so close to history like that is amazing.

Standing in front of the Coliseum and next to the gladiator training site.  As we walked around the Colosseum we constantly talked about exactly what the Colosseum was used for brutal bloody games with gladiators, slaves, and wild animals.  There are tidbits of information located around the Colosseum to help you figure out where you are and what you're looking at.

Our next stop was the Fontana di Trevi or the Trevi fountain.  Getting to these must see sights can sometimes be the best part because most of the time these places are tucked into side streets in the middle of tall buildings and you don't know you are there until you turn a corner or walk through a narrow alley and you see this...an amazing sight!

By the time we got to the Trevi Fountain the blue skies turned into freezing rain!

Throwing a coin over the right shoulder ensures your return to Rome...Of course Tasha did that!

It was pouring rain as we made our way to the Spanish Steps and we were soaked straight into our shoes...It wasn't a fun time!

They closed off most of the Spanish Steps because the freezing rain made it slippery. Soon after it began to snow.

At the top of the Spanish Steps you could see the rooftops of Rome.

At this point we were very cold and wet so we called it an early day and retreated to the warmth of the BnB. We did have an adventure for dinner but stay tuned for the Rome Food Edition for that!
